The Organisation

Our client works across Victoria to assist with the needs and voice of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, advocating to improve access to strengthen women’s resilience and justice and eliminate systemic violence. They deliver wellbeing and cultural programs and workshops, alongside culturally safe, holistic, specialist family violence support, case management and legal services.

The Role

  
Reporting to the Managing Lawyer you will work collaboratively to ensure the organisations clients are supported to address their complex legal and support needs. You will also be responsible to:
  • Provide paralegal assistance including assisting with day to day management of client files, drafting of documents and letters, assisting with legal research and preparation of briefs to barristers
  • Demonstrate ability to handle difficult situations with tact and cultural appropriateness whilst always maintaining confidentiality
  • Comply with set service standards and processes
  • Maintain and develop relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders regionally
  • Provide information and support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients in an appropriate and culturally safe manner

Skills Required
  
You will have 1-3 years’ experience in paralegal or client support roles with an ability to build strong trusting relationships with clients and aboriginal people who have experienced trauma. Communicating effectively through your high level of listening skills and oral communication, you will also be able to:
  • Maintain and prioritise high quality output, whilst meeting deadlines and juggling competing demands in a high volume work area
  • Demonstrate understanding and knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and societies and the impacting issues, including sexual assault, family violence, protection of children, family law and care
  • Prepare concise and clear well-presented written material
  • Qualifications in Community Services or Legal / Paralegal studies
  • Proficient in MS Word, Outlook and Excel, with experience in operating and maintaining client management databases
  • Current driving license
