The Organisation
As a leading Australian voice The Butterfly Foundation represents people living with eating disorders and negative body image and their family and friends. Left unaddressed, the medical, psychological, physical and social consequences can be long term and for many life threatening.
Butterfly advocates for improved services from both government and independent sources whilst raising public awareness in the media and via community debate. The Foundation operates the National Eating Disorders Helpline, a range of innovative clinical treatment and support programs across Australia, and delivers prevention initiatives in schools and the community.
The Foundation has recently committed to the development of Australia’s first residential treatment facility for eating disorders with its joint venture partner endED. The eating disorder sector has also welcomed major Medicare reform to improve access and affordability.

The Role

Reporting to the CEO you will play a pivotal role in supporting Butterfly’s eating disorder policy and advocacy agendas by ensuring all programs delivered are fit-for-purpose, add value and provide positive outcomes for all clients and the wider community. You will do this by:                        
  • Developing and maintaining strategic relationships with a diverse range of key sector experts, research partners, funding bodies e.g. community service providers, universities, individuals with lived experience and Government
  • Creating, implementing and leading a knowledge management, research and evaluation strategy to support funded projects
  • Identifying emerging evidence and trends relating to eating disorders that may inform and influence Butterfly’s advocacy, awareness campaigns and community dialogue
  • Developing policy and position papers and contributing to government submissions
  • Managing key research projects to ensure they are impactful through effective evaluation of outcomes

Skills Required

You have a successful track record in policy development and evaluation that informs advocacy campaigns and program development ideally within a public health or social policy setting.
Specific skills and experience required include:
  • High level strategic policy and campaign direction, advice and planning
  • Expert stakeholder engagement and relationship building; ability to influence, negotiate and collaborate diplomatically
  • Outstanding communication skills to frame and translate research evidence and policy into clear and compelling narratives
  • Sound ability to work across various research methodologies (qualitative and quantitative) and effectively analyse and synthesise information
  • The capacity to comprehend and handle sensitive situations in the area of mental health
