The Role
  
Reporting to the principal legal officer, this role sits within the workplace advice and support team, advocating for both members’ employment rights and entitlements whilst providing advice and representation for their individual employment issues.  You will collaboratively support the Principal Legal Officer to provide supervision, leadership and technical guidance to the team.
Additionally you will:
  • Provide representation and advocacy on behalf of members before industrial tribunals
  • Work in collaboration with organisers to provide information and advice
  • Assist with enterprise agreement interpretation and negotiation
  • Provide mentorship support to junior employees in the team
  • Potentially on occasion act in the principal lawyer role

Skills Required
  
You have in depth working knowledge and significant experience of contemporary employment issues with proven ability to deliver results for union members. You offer a demonstrated experience interpreting and applying legislation, industrial instruments and case law to specific matters. Previous experience in representation and advocacy before industrial tribunals and primarily the Federal Court of Australia and the Federal Circuit Court is required. 
  
Additionally, you bring:
  • Legal qualifications with eligibility to hold an unrestricted practicing certificate
  • Experience in advocacy, negotiation, mediation, advisory and litigation
  • Influential leadership and management expertise
  • Well-developed research and technical skills
  • A commitment to union values
