The Organisation

For almost 40 years Canteen has been at the forefront of supporting young people (12-25 years) who are cancer patients as well as young people dealing with the diagnosis of a parent or sibling with cancer.

Canteen’s purpose is to be in the corner of every young person impacted by cancer. This has driven the organisation to develop and implement a wide range of innovative interventions, including psychosocial and peer support programs, a world-leading hospital-based specialist, youth-specific treatment and support initiative, cutting-edge clinical trials and the recently launched Cancer Hub.

Canteen works by having young people at the centre of everything they do. Initially established by a group of young cancer patients in 1985, the organisation continues to truly understand how cancer is different in a young person’s world through their leading-edge research into the emotional and social impacts of cancer.

The Role

You will provide strategic advice to the CEO and executive team to move the organisation forward on critical aspects of people & culture and ensure that Canteen’s workforce and volunteers have the appropriate culture, capability and organisational design to meet the organisation’s strategic objectives.

With a focus on diversity, innovation, flexibility, and high performance you’ll lead a people and culture team to deliver on strategy. As part of the executive leadership team, you’ll contribute to overall strategic planning and implementation, change management, risk management and sustainability.

Specifically, you will:
  • Develop a best practice people and culture plan with clear KPIs which takes account of the post-COVID work environment
  • Establish people and culture priorities and provide regular reporting to the CEO and board
  • Review and strengthen compliance processes in alignment with employment law, legislation, quality standards and service requirements

Skills Required

You are a true HR generalist who brings a modern view of people and culture and thrives on developing and implementing solutions that deliver outstanding outcomes for employees and organisations. With proven ability to translate strategy into action as well as manage the detail of day-to-day operations, you’re skilled in engaging others in your vision.

Your background may be from not for profit or from a corporate role which was broadly defined.  Additionally, you have a track record in:
  • Leading best practice HR initiatives and projects
  • Building strong engagement
  • Ensuring high quality compliance processes
  • Reporting at executive and board level
  • Managing people to maximise effectiveness and well-being
