The Organisation

The Collieries’ Staff and Officials Association (CSOA) is a union and a division of Professionals Australia representing staff and officials including supervisory, professional, administrative, clerical and technical employees. Members are located across sites within Australia including the Illawarra, Western District, Hunter and Newcastle in New South Wales, Bowen Basin, Surat Basin and Ipswich in Queensland, and in Tasmania and Western Australia. CSOA makes a positive difference in members’ workplaces ensuring workers are remunerated and treated fairly during these times of significant change.


The Role

With the quickly changing needs of members front of mind, you will drive and increase the influence of workers across all site locations. Along with a small skilled team of organisers, you will develop and implement the industrial, legal and organising strategies. The role will ideally be based in Sydney however this may be flexible. Specifically you will:
  • Coordinate workplace campaigns and negotiations
  • Develop campaigns to empower workers
  • Travel across NSW & QLD on a fortnightly basis to conduct key collective bargaining
  • Recruit and grow membership
  • Manage internal and external stakeholder relations


Skills Required

You will have the skills and initiative to lead campaigns, manage staff, and coordinate work with your colleagues to achieve targeted outcomes.  This position would be highly suited to candidates experienced in industrial relations or law who bring a high level of enthusiasm and initiative. You have a demonstrated ability to:
  • Negotiate successful outcomes and drive bargaining agreements
  • Implement legal, industrial campaigns and organising strategies
  • Advocate, negotiate and apply influential leadership skills
  • Offer working knowledge of contemporary employment issues
  • Work collaboratively within a dynamic small knit team
Ideally you are tertiary qualified in law or industrial relations however not essential.
